Eyelid Surgery.

Welcome to the Department of Plastic Surgery of the healthcare facility Lékařský dům Praha 7.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelids are among the most sensitive areas of the face and our age affects them earlier than anything else.

Eyelid surgery (the so-called blepharoplasty) removes excess skin and fat bags from the eyelids, thereby rejuvenating and brightening the expression around the eyes.

The procedure does not only have aesthetic reasons, in some people it prevents vision problems.

Blepharoplasty mainly addresses these issues:
ptosis (the drop of the upper eyelid over the edge of the pupil), fat prolapse and dermatochalasis (excess loose skin)

At our clinic we perform three types of eyelid surgery:
Classic upper eyelid sculpture, Classic lower eyelid sculpture, Transconjunctival lower eyelid surgery

The procedures can be combined as needed – the classic upper eyelid plastic surgery with the classic or the transconjunctival lower eyelid plastic surgery.

You can get a clear answer to the question of whether eyelid surgery is suitable for you by consulting one of our plastic surgeons.

PTOSIS

Ptosis, or the drop of the upper eyelid over the edge of the pupil, is caused by an insufficiency of the eyelid lifter.

It can be either congenital or acquired.

If the upper eyelid reaches over the edge of the pupil, the field of view is narrower; this affects the eyesight and can lead to headaches.

FAT PROLAPSE

Eyes are stored in the skull on fat pads, the parts of which, with age in the form of so-called fat prolapses, push under the skin of the eyelids and thus cause the famous “bags” under the eyes.

In this case, it is good not to delay the surgery – if the skin is still flexible enough, it returns to its original position after removing the fat projections. However, if the skin sags to the edge of the face, the surgery is more complicated.

DERMATOCHALASIS

They are the result of a loss of skin elasticity, especially in conjunction with fat protrusions that press on the skin from below.

Excesses are very often formed by the skin of the upper eyelids which are larger. These excesses can form folds and gradually, by their weight, make it difficult to move the upper eyelid, cause it to fall and can cause eye fatigue accompanied by tearing or headaches.

In addition to age, genetic predispositions also affect the susceptibility to skin excess.

CLASSIC UPPER EYELID SCULPTURE

This is an outpatient surgery with local anaesthesia, taking about 60 minutes.

It reduces excess skin, removes fat bags above the inner corners and in some cases strengthens the circular eye muscle.

CLASSIC LOWER EYELID SCULPTURE

Like the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids are operated on under local anaesthesia. The surgeon removes excess skin and removes fat sacs from 3 chambers causing “bags” under the eyes.

This method is preferred in case of larger skin excesses.

TRANSCONJUNCTIVAL LOWER EYELID SURGERY

This is the most modern method of lower eyelid surgery.

Under a short general anaesthesia lasting about half an hour, the mucous membranes of the conjunctival sac are cut with a laser scalpel and fat prolapses are removed. Any small skin excess is corrected by a flat-applied CO2 laser.

The operation is followed by a 24-hour hospitalization.

Preoperative and Postoperative Care

Before the surgery

If you decide for an eyelid surgery after the consultation, you can arrange the date of the surgery and receive preoperative instructions.
Medicines that reduce blood clotting and promote bleeding are not recommended for at least a week before the procedure.
We recommend that you arrange an escort to take you home after the surgery, as it is not possible to drive a car after the surgery.

Don’t forget to bring dark sunglasses, which you will use after the surgery. Do not apply makeup on the day of the procedure and remove your contact lenses.

The surgery is done on the same day you arrive at the clinic.

After the surgery

After the classic surgery, the operated patient goes home on the same day, the stiches are usually removed on the 7th day after the surgery.
After laser surgery of the lower eyelids, the patient stays at the clinic until the next day.

The length of home treatment during which swelling and bruising absorbs, and the time when the patient becomes fully able to work, depend on the type of procedure:

  • Classic upper eyelid plastic surgery – 7 days of home treatment, full work capacity in 2 weeks after the surgery
  • Classic lower eyelid plastic surgery – 7 days of home treatment (maximum time in a horizontal position), full work capacity in 3 weeks after the surgery
  • Transconjunctival blepharoplasty – 10 to 14 days of home treatment, full work capacity in 4 weeks after the surgery; for 3 months after the surgery it is necessary to avoid UV radiation

When will the results be visible?

After the first week, the biggest swelling disappears, after the classic blepharoplasty, pink scars will still be visible.
However, over time (within a few months), they will lighten and become almost invisible. The pink colour of the skin disappears in 3 months, but it can be covered with makeup.

The duration of the effect of the surgery is very individual, the literature states 5 – 10 years, but practice shows it could be many more or many less; the surgery can be repeated.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions? We have answers.

Is it possible to get rid of the dark circles underneath my eyes?

Lower eyelid surgery is used in order to remove the dark circles underneath the eyes.

For this procedure, a personal consultation is required.

The lower eyelid surgery can either be performed in a classic way or with a laser. Although the laser is more modern and quite gentle, it can not be used in every situation.

What is the best time to have the protruding ears of a child surgically repaired?

It is recommended for pre-school kids to undergo this procedure, as it is less painful for them.

In children up to 10 years of age, this procedure is covered by the health insurance company.

How often after breast augmentation would I have to see a doctor?

Yes, we do.

Galvanic iron is one way you can keep your ageing skin in shape without having to undergo surgery. It rejuvenates the skin, smooths wrinkles, revitalises the scalp and smooths the whole body.

I have acne scars and and sore holes on my face. Can they be removed?

Acne scars on the face usually extend into the deeper layers of the skin and only surgery can improve the condition.

Mechanical sanding is used first, shallower scars and previously sanded scars are then softened by surface laser evaporation of the skin surface.

Small areas can be treated on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, for larger areas a short general anaesthesia is required.

The healing time is about 10 to 12 days.

If the skin is in a very bad shape it can be improved by repeated laser procedures at intervals of 6 months.

Which plastic surgeries are covered by health insurance?

Ear correction for children younger up to 10 years of age.
