Protruding Ears.

Welcome to the Department of Plastic Surgery of the healthcare facility Lékařský dům Praha 7.

Otoplasty

Protruding ear auricles are among the most common cosmetic defects.

The principle of the surgery is to restore the correct angles between wrongly positioned cartilaginous segments of the auricle. In the most frequently performed procedure, the incision is done in a fold behind the earlobe. The resulting scar is very inconspicuous and is hidden from view.

If the incorrect position of the auricles is also associated with the shape deviations of the auricle relief, cartilage modelling is also performed

Ear surgery is in most cases performed under local anaesthesia and lasts approximately 1 hour.

CHILDREN

Ear correction can also be performed on children (5 years and older). Up to 10 years of age, this procedure is covered by health insurance.

In the case of children, it is advisable to perform otoplasty as soon as possible, because the ears heal better.

The ears are fully developed at the age of four. Ear auricle plastic surgery is most often performed on children aged 5-7, usually when they start school.

Children also tolerate the postoperative course well, because the fine and flexible cartilage of the child’s auricles does not cause severe pain.

Postoperative Care

Immediately after the surgery, the patient’s head is bandaged with an elastic bandage with cotton wool.

The ears can hurt significantly during the first days after surgery, which can be relieved by painkillers.

For the first days after the surgery, the patient should sleep on his back, thus avoiding severe side swellings and associated pain. Exercise is not recommended.

The first dressing is usually performed on the 2nd day after the surgery, the next one about a week later. Around 12 days after the ears plastic surgery, the overall head bandage is removed and the sutures behind the auricle are removed.

After removing the bandage, it is necessary to wash the hair daily for several days, preferably with a baby shampoo.

For the next 2-3 weeks, the patient should be careful and we recommend fixing the auricles at night with a scarf, bandage or headband. For 1 month, it is necessary to protect the auricle from injury and not to participate in team sports.

In the winter months, it is necessary to avoid cold.
In the summer months, we do not recommend swimming in public pools or ponds.

Full physical and sports activities are not recommended sooner than 2 months after surgery, once the wound has already sufficiently grown together. We do not recommend sun tanning the face and auricles for 3 months after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions? We have answers.

Is it possible to get rid of the dark circles underneath my eyes?

Lower eyelid surgery is used in order to remove the dark circles underneath the eyes.

For this procedure, a personal consultation is required.

The lower eyelid surgery can either be performed in a classic way or with a laser. Although the laser is more modern and quite gentle, it can not be used in every situation.

What is the best time to have the protruding ears of a child surgically repaired?

It is recommended for pre-school kids to undergo this procedure, as it is less painful for them.

In children up to 10 years of age, this procedure is covered by the health insurance company.

Do you also use galvanic iron in order to treat the skin?

Yes, we do.

Galvanic iron is one way you can keep your ageing skin in shape without having to undergo surgery. It rejuvenates the skin, smooths wrinkles, revitalises the scalp and smooths the whole body.

I have acne scars and and sore holes on my face. Can they be removed?

Acne scars on the face usually extend into the deeper layers of the skin and only surgery can improve the condition.

Mechanical sanding is used first, shallower scars and previously sanded scars are then softened by surface laser evaporation of the skin surface.

Small areas can be treated on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, for larger areas a short general anaesthesia is required.

The healing time is about 10 to 12 days.

If the skin is in a very bad shape it can be improved by repeated laser procedures at intervals of 6 months.

Which plastic surgeries are covered by health insurance?

Ear correction for children younger up to 10 years of age.
